I've had many questions lately on our barn door baby gate so I thought a better post with better instructions was a MUST. This is the first thing people notice when they walk into our home and is always complimented. Although it's pretty, it's extremely functional as well! I've also linked the FULL PLANS on my blog post so you can build one for your home too!
"During" Progress
We used Remodelaholic's full plans. However we did make a few changes so we used a bit more lumber. The changes we made included adding the cross braces to the back of the gate as well for a more finished look from either side, as well as making our gate wider to fit our doorway. You are going to have to do some estimation yourself as everyone's doorway measurement's will be different so buy yourself a few extra boards!

We purchased:
(4) 1x6x96 Boards
(10) 1x4x96 Boards
Other materials you will need for this project include:
  • Tape Measure
  • Miter Saw
  • Brad Nailer
  • Square
  • Sandpaper
  • Foam Brushes
  • Stain
  • Utility Knife
  • Gate Hardware
It took my hubby and I about a full day to finish this project! He built and I finished with a stain. Be sure when you install your door that you are installing the hinges directly into a stud..this gate is heavy!
We also gave our gate a rustic look by using our utility knife to shave the edges of the wood, and then used sandpaper to soften the edges. This make the wood look worn and weathered, the perfect look for our farmhouse!
Functional and pretty! This gate helps keep kids in and dogs out! You can visit my blog to find the link to the plans as well as more tips for building your own barn door baby gate!

Does this really require 14 8' boards? It looks excessively heavy.

Thanks so much for sharing this. Weā€™d like to be able to make this so that it functions like a sliding door that goes on the side between the refrigerator and wall when opened. Any suggestions? Love how yours looks and the colors of the do and room!

Thank you for sharing. Unrelated to door, what paint color is on your wall?
