I am a total weirdo and decided that I wanted to build bunk beds for my cat + dog. Our cat loves being up high and the dog loves anywhere that her bed is, so it ended up being a smart idea. We had the perfect nook in our bedroom for it, and to my delight, they actually sleep there! Here's how we built it.
Meow, Woof! Bear & Cici love their bunk beds! See more of our pet DIYs here!
Measurements will vary based on your desired size.
Cut 2 identical plywood squares the desired size of each bed.
Cut 1x3" board to length sufficient to create "lip" on 3 edges of each plywood square.
Use 2 1/2″ wood screws to put together the edges of each bunk, and then securing the edges to the base of the bunk. This creates the beds/trays.
Create 2 of these "trays" and then stack them using more screws + 2"x2" boards cut to the desired height. Leave your pet room to stand comfortably.
We used 3 1/2″ wood screws to screw in the posts to the bottom bunk, going through the bottom, and then to the top bunk, going through the top. When complete, stain or paint as desired. This is the stain that we used.
The final bunk beds! We added my dog's bed to the bottom because the prefers extra plush, being the diva that she is!
