I just adopted a rescue dog and at first it wouldn't bark at all, than she started barking continuously. I hated the idea of a bark collar but it reached the point where we had no choice as it was non stop. We purchased a very good bark collar from our local pet store and used it over the next 10 days. Wow! I was happy. we have never had to put the bark collar back on and she has been 2 months and she is doing very well. When she barks now, it is for good reason as we only shocked her when she barked for no reason and now when you say enough she stops. We tried many other things but felt that if we had to resort to this method, at least it wouldn't be for very long. Good Luck !

You need to spend time training your dog. There are lots of videos and info on the internet, discuss with your vet which methods to try first if a private trainer is too costly. Here are 3 links to help you out. Dogs just want to please you and receive unconditional love in return. Patience and continuity are keys to success. I hope you have a solution. As a person who has neighbors behind with two barking dogs and one next door, it is really annoying.

Spritz with water simultaneously with sharp command like "NO BARK". Be consistent. After 2-3 days you can just show the spray bottle or give the command. Of course some dogs need a refresher course ever so often. Works for me.

Use treats to stop him the minute a person comes into view or rings the doorbell...My dog barks when our door bell rings but i stop him by patting him calmly...He knows then there's no threat..Never ever use a shock collar..It's cruel and doesn't work anyway.

I train red zone dogs that frequently are chronic barkers. Here is how I stop barking..... when dog barks, don't speak to them or say their name, or look them in the eye, just make a noise like a loud ahhhkk. When they stop barking, say good dog. If that isn't enough keep an object in your pocket you can drop on the floor that will make a noise, like a check book, it distracts the dog and they stop barking, then say good dog. Never reward your dog for barking with acknowledgment. Most dogs pick up on what behavior you want in a couple days. Takes me 2 days to train a red zone pitbull.

After you get the dog to stop barking, then advance the training to having them sit or lay down away from the door so someone can enter, They will already have to obey sit and stay commands, these can be verbal or hand commands.

If your dog is a chronic barker, he probably needs more exercise 2x a day. We train all our dogs to run alongside a bike, so they get a good workout. A dog park is good too. All my dogs love to play fetch the stick and tennis balls.

Obedience training taught me to use a spray bottle of water. When the dog barks lightly spray him the face. He will not like getting wet and will quickly learn what the spray bottle means. Soon you will only need to show him the bottle! Worked great on my German Shepherd!

A very simple solution to the problem. Use a can ( 14-15 oz ) cut the top off with a no sharp edge can opener. Rinse out the can and let dry. Add a few pennies and small rocks to the can. Put the lid back on and tape it in place with duct tape or it can be glued in place. The can can even be decorated or painted. I have several so I always have one within reach if needed.

When the dog starts to bark or is barking shake the can so it creates a loud noise and say STOP ! or NO BARK ! It doesn't take long to teach the dog not to bark when you say those words. Indoors or outside it works. I have made many for friends who had the same problem...it's always worked.

You just have to be very consistent in using it to start with.....before long you will only have to say the word or words and not even have to use the can at all.

It can also be used to correct other unwanted behaviors using the same method.

Only you will need to use one word.... STOP ! or whatever you choose.

The water idea does work...I just don't like the wet dog smell.

That's a tough one. The only way I would know would be to put your dog on a leash in the yard for a short training period. You could then control your dog and bring him to you when he starts barking. Once he learned to stop barking you could remove the leash. Dogs learn pretty quickly, it shouldn't take too long. A little patience and training will go a long way!

This method also worked last night as I went to my mail box out by the street a neighborhood dog approached me....He wasn't acting too friendly ( has happened in the past) So I tried the can method on him using the word NO ! in a VERY firm tone. He turned and left in a hurry on the third shake of the can.
