I am a single DIY mom, and I'm putting together an old folk farm on a tight budget. (Homeschooling two special needs kids and doctor appts are expensive). Pictures would be most appreciative! Thank you! Jacquie

look up info on a straw bale garden. You don't need to prepare the soil. Grow plants on top, herbs on the side. Just saw this and I'll be trying it this spring.

Go to the library and look at Mother Earth News magazine. You might also go to their web site. They have all kinds of articles on self-sufficiency and family farming and building.

Look up wooden pallet gardening. If you go to business that receive stock on wooden pallets, some of them will just give you the pallets. When you are ready to plant your seeds, just get a good top soil or potting soil. put the soil in the pallets. Then in between the open wooden slates plant you seeds. Keep watered.

@Diana reeves Sometimes there are problems with pallets. Some use wood that has been treated to stop rot or insect infestation.
