How to deter an adult dog from urinating in the house?

Try squirting ammonia on the furniture leg or leg of any furniture

If he hasn't been neutered, neutering will generally solve the problem. I know you don't want to harm him, but you might try scaring him by spraying him with water whenever you catch him in the act. Otherwise, you may have to resort to crating him when he's in the house and you're not readily at hand to observe him.

My aunt rescued an older, mistreated dog. They use a doggie diaper when he is in the house as they cannot grab him fast enough when he starts to whiz. He does use the doggie door for his other business usually. Your carpet will be destroyed if he is allowed to walk around unsupervised.

I used a dog leash in the house, also, and just took mine outside every hour. Otherwise, he stayed by my side.

Dals may have a genetic issue with certain minerals in the diet, be sure he's healthy... And if he was an adult when he was altered, this may be why he ended up in rescue to begin with! I use Belly Bands on some of my male dogs....like a 'diaper' boy for male dogs doesn't go between the legs, only around the abdomen where the plumbing is!

make sure he doesn't have an UTI. Use a ladle to catch the pee as he goes. Urine must be the first one in the morning.

When I used to work for a breeder we crate trained all the dogs. You put the dog in a crate just big enough for them at night next to your bed, and they will usually only pee on themselves once or twice, when you hear them whining, you have to get up and let them out, then back to the crate. This way they develop bladder control and will learn you will respond to their whining and open the door so they can go. Takes a week or two. Then they get smart and will sit by the door and maybe give a bark to get your attention. Praise them when they go outside. The general rule is out every 2 hours during the day, first thing in the morning and before bed. Take your dog for a nice long walk 2x a day. Dogs can get infections too, and a vet visit would be in order if this is something new.

If you leave your dog alone at home all day, you may have to put in a dog run while your out. Make sure your run has a shade area, water and food, a bed, and an area that easy to clean up for them to use as a bathroom, and I like to leave some chew toys so they don't get frustrated.

Is your dog neutered? Male dogs that are not neutered tend to mark more. Also, dogs that are not neutered/spayed can develop problems with their reproductive organs...testicular cancer, and septic uterus. I would have my dog taken to the vet just the make sure nothing else is going on.

I never liked kenneling a dog, but I adopted a little female dog in May 2017, that has NO accidents in the house when she is kenneled when I go anywhere, including when I go outside just to do chores around my farm. It's safer for her, and a lot less work for me! When I'm inside, I make sure to take her out frequently. Personally, I would rather kennel my dog than be frustrated, upset, or angry...or have to keep paying for carpet cleaning.

I use to have a male Dalmation and I let him outside emmediately after eating or drinking. Povlov's theory, do it enough times they automatically do it all on their own. My Sparky was so funny. Before he would go out he checked to see if it was raining and if it was he would go to the back door and 9 times out of 10 it wasn't raining in the back yad and he went out. Other wise I had to take him out in the rain and hold an umbrella over him to keep him dry. He didn't care if I got wet. LOL. He had very few spots, so when people doubted me and said he was a Pit Bull, I told them, he fooled you, and it orked. He got a shower every week but then go out and roll around in the dirt as if he was trying o hide his spots. My son said he was a wannabe Dalmatian, so I use tell him he was a Dalmatian in gognito as a Pit Bull, to help protect me. Don't you just love your Dalmatian? I would love to have another, but, I'm not certain how well it would get along with my Wolf.

Yep. Take the dog to the vet. If he isn't neutered, do that too.
