how clean is the litter box? Are you scooping the poop and clumps daily? Did you switch brands of litter? Cats...plural. Each cat needs its own litter box, and 1 extra for emergencies. Next clean the carpet. The best for removing cat wee is natures miracle. It a commercial product sold many places...Wally World, worlds largest on line retailer.foster and smith on line catalog. Take your pick and compare prices. It’s a product that has enzymes to break up the wee. Cat pee is potent because it’s oil based pee, not a water based pee. I have 3 cats and 5 litter boxes.

  • How many cats and how many cat boxes? If the boxes are not clean they will go elsewhere. Location sometimes does matter. If male, have they been neutered? Could be marking territory. When was their last check up - rule out any illness.

Go to www.drelseys.com Click on "Resources" and read up. Very helpful information.

I really, really feel for you. My cat developed "litter box aversion" after a severe case of diarrhea from a long acting antibacterial shot. Probiotics eventually cured the diarrhea but I never got her to accept a litter box again so now she is indoor/outdoor.

First check with your vet to make sure they don't have a clinical problem and are trying to tell you something.

You should have 1 box per cat and clean it at least once of day. If your cat is picky about a clean box you need to clean it more often. Have you changed cat litter? Some cats dislike certain textures of cat litter and won't use the box because of that. Have they always done this or is a new behavior? Could be a time for a trip to the vet. They can rule out possible physical problems.

The question I have for you is how long have they been doing this, has it always happened, just started recently, a new family cat member brought in?

I have found if the box is dirty and they go elsewhere in the house, I need to fix that by cleaning thoroughly and fresh litter.

Speaking of litter, if you have changed brands lately, that may be a cause of their dissatisfaction resulting in change of habits.

You may need more litter boxes. They are fussy.
