kittens or older cats? kittens are easier. most cats will use a litter box with out issues, if they are neutered and spayed. food treats help, its a matter of getting their trust. speaking of feral cats, my former feral kitten wants her food
the cats need to be handled, petted, played with. reward with a food treat, ignore bad behavior, reward the good. if you have more than 1 cat, get multiple litter boxes at least 1 per cat. some cats are picky about the litter..get smaller bags of litter to see what they like. now about that bad behavior make the furniture the bad guy....using a table leg to scratch on? wrap it in clear tape sticky side out. cats feel safer in higher places give them a designated hi place to go to. i feed my cats in their carrying crates, no problem loading them up for a vet visit. it also gives them a place to eat at their own pace. my freddie gray would scarf down as much as he could...then up chuck it. he knows that the other cats cant get his food if he's crated, and will eat normally.
If they are no longer kittens it’s too late.
Move them to a farm that needs mice and rat control. The cats will take care of themselves and benefit the farmer. That’s all you can do for grown feral cats.
No loud noises, ignore bad behavior reward the good. Cat treats, food. Don’t stare at them in the eyes. It’s considered aggression. Find an older tee shirt of yours, wear it a while. Then put it where they like to lay. If miss behaving...scratching where they shouldn’t use a squirt of water from a spray bottle. Set the bottle to stream not spray. Give them some time....and they will worship you as the giver of food.
Try hand fed cat treats.
one more time...this I pad has a ghost that erases my replies. Cats get curious. Esp. When food is present. Try positioning the food a bit closer to you each day. Let them sniff the back of your hand. Don’t grab at them. If you have a fishing rod, tye a toy mouse to it, and go “cat fishing”.
Keep a predictable routine. My three know that come 4 pm food goes into the dishes. Play with them...child’s toy fishing rod...cat nip mouse on the end Of the string. Reel them closer. Reward with cat treats, Give them a safe place to hide...cardboard box with a towel...
