What can I use or make as a top for the base of my birdbath stand?

I know so many people that have the base of a birdbath sitting in the corner of their garage or storage units. Know body can ever seem to bring themselves to get rid of them. Well, I'm one of those people.....

I'm a single Mom (on disability) with two kids and we all love watching what wildlife there is to see living in town. I could personally do without the raccoons, but we all love birds. My daughter especially has wanted a birdbath. She loves watching them splash around. (Plus we all get a kick out of watching our indoor cat Mr. Biggelsworth sit like a statue watching the birds in our neighborhood). I needed some inexpensive, diy ideas for resurrecting my birdbath. I already know that I'm going to have spend some money on a water aggitator. The rippling water attracts the birds and helps slowdown the growth of algae. I've been researching inexpensive water aggitators. But, first I need to find something that once was used for something, but now can be transformed into the top of our birdbath stand. I have ideas, but I want ideas from some the best diy minds ever.

Also, on a side note, I would need to know what bird friendly paints, etc.... that I would need to complete my project.

My kids and I will be working on this project together. We're looking forward to your ideas.

Thank You - Tiff -

Any larger glass, metal, or porcelain dish will work as a birdbath. Even a smaller trash can lid could be utilized. You'd only need to use a metal or wooden "band" to adhere to the base, which would then sit atop your birdbath's pedestal. Obviously, using glass or porcelain would not do for a 4 season birdbath in cold climates.

I agree, I made a birdbath/feeder out of clay pots and saucers for my dad for Christmas, painted it with his favorite college football team colors and logo, and he loved it !
