What can l do to stop our cat from clawing our new large area rugs???

Hi Shari, I'm told cats hate citrus oil, have you considered spraying your rugs with a combo of orange oil and water?
my cat suddenly started clawing my wooden triple dresser in the middle of the night, we got him to stop by spraying him with water. Now, if he sees the water bottle, he runs.

Well, declaw it.
Put pepper on the rug and them vacuum after a few days. When I was young, my mom tried this for our family cat and it worked
Rub catnip on the scratching post, it worked very well for my cat who never bothered the furnisher after that.
