Cedar Stem Summer Wreath

Using fallen branches after a recent storm, my husband cut the branches (or stems as the Dollar store calls them) into 1 1/4 or so lengths for me. We did not measure, but eyeing it, they should be about the same height standing up. I love this project because if you have access to any trimmed or broken tree branches this project is almost free and so pretty. Due to the cedar tree branches broken in the storm, my wreath also smells wonderful in passing. I love the aroma of cedar wood. If you do not have access to tree branches to cut, you can get them at the Dollar Tree for $1 a bag. They come in 2 sizes in the bags. There are tall thin ones like a thumb size, or the shorter, wider ones which are more like what I used.

Cut about 56 to 70, depending on size and wreath size. If you buy them, you will need about 3 bags.

Then I organized them into "flower" shapes. I tried to fit a slightly larger one in the center and 6 or 7 around the center. I hot glued them in groups. Hot glue works great on wood and I thought it strong enough. This process took a little time. I glued nine groups for this wreath.

After I glued the groups together I put them in a wreath shape and glued all the groups of "flowers" together. To reinforce it and make it more stable I added craft sticks to the back side. This kept the wreath from twisting when I picked it up. It really stabilized it well.

This is how the back looked with the craft sticks, and you do not see it from the front when it is hanged on the wall or door.

I chose 3 colors and painted the flowers in my wreath with acrylic paint I had on hand. This process went fast. I did not like the look of a pink paint, so I chose the 3 primary colors. It did take a little time to dry. I left it over night but it probably would have been usable in a couple hours.

Then I glued a rafia bow and faux sunflower face on it. I love the bright summer look of this and the aroma of the cedar is wonderful. This is hanging on a command hook. You can hot glue rafia to the back for a hanger. I love the look and the farm or country feel of this wreath. Any colors for holidays or seasons could be used. I can see this for Christmas with a mini snow man on greenery, or red white and blue for July. It is very adaptable for any season and the base was free or next to free!
