Changing Summer Planters to Fall Planters

Are Your Summer Planters looking a little worse for wear? Or maybe even looking really awful, like the one I’m about to show you. It’s super easy to change out those bedraggled looking planters to cheerful and festive Fall Planters.

It's a little difficult to see, but the dracena spike and the vinca vine have pretty much taken over this little planter. There are dried up marigolds and carnations in the pot too. It's looking pretty sad!

First, of all gather a few supplies:

Your tired Summer Planter

A Mum or two, depending on the size of your planter

A few pumpkins or gourds

Fall themed stakes (totally optional)

Here, I simply pulled out the marigolds and carnations. I try to do this when the planters have dried out, so it’s easier to remove the old plants. If the plants don’t pull out easily, you can use a knife to dig and loosen the roots. I leave non-flowering plants in the container like spikes, grasses, ivy (or other vine-type plants).

Next, I added in a mum. You can use pansies, asters or any other fall plants instead of mums. You may need to dig around a little to make room for the new plant. After adding in new plants, fill in holes with fresh potting mix and give it all a good, slow drink of water. I also gave the vinca vine a much needed haircut and trimmed up the dracaena spike.

I added some pumpkins and a little scarecrow pick to finish out this sweet festive planter. I kind of have a thing for scarecrows - they are so stinkin' CUTE!

This is a really fun and easy way to recycle your outdoor summer planters to fall. This took me hardly any time and the cost was minimal too.
