Ever planted mums in your front porch pots then thought they looked a little drab? Here's an easy trick to help them go from boring to beautiful!
They’re here. Bright yellow ones and burnt orange ones and crimson red ones, lining the shelves of garden centers and food markets everywhere. Glorious, fall mums just waiting to be bought and replanted in a pot by your front door.

But is it really that easy? Just place the plant in a pot, add some fresh soil, and you’ve got a lovely mum vignette? Most likely, you’ll end up with this. A leggy plant in a lovely pot with a sense that’s something’s missing.
Here’s an easy trick to remedy that, using mini pumpkins, Indian corn and floral picks.
Wrap the wire from the floral pick tightly around the corn  just below the husk. Then place the pick in the soil in the pot, filling in the “gaps” and empty spaces. You can also add a mini pumpkin or two. I first placed a bow in the front, using the same technique with a floral pick, then added corn and pumpkins to either side. And, my absolute favorite touch? A funky little feather hot glued to the bow.
The result? A couple grocery store mums transformed into inviting Fall vignettes. I placed the pots on the steps leading into my back courtyard. I just love sitting out there at night, enjoying the crisp air and awaiting the Fall season heralded by my little mums.
