While going through a drawer in my laundry room cabinets recently, I came across these two damaged antique curtain rod finials. For those who follow me on Hometalk, you know that I’m a collector of anything made of “real” wood. These are just more treasures found in my late father’s shop. So to my house they came. Hadn’t thought about them in a while.

Realizing they couldn’t be used AS IS, I grabbed my trusty Dremel hand tool and proceeded to cut off the damaged areas. I sanded the rough areas to level them. Here is what they looked like afterwards. Do you see what I saw? I knew immediately how I would use them.

I found two tiny eye screws and twisted one into each of these pieces. Next I hand sanded the old varnish off the pieces. I grabbed my acrylic paints tote and picked out what I would use to paint them.

I started with gold paint and then gave them a very light bronze wash. I then painted the tops with burnt sienna paint. Don’t you love my little acorns? But I’m not through yet. I have always loved the old English proverb, “ Mighty Oaks From Little Acorns Grow.” So I set out to make my decor piece. I began looking for my perfect oak tree. Didn’t have to go far because I found a picture of the Sidney Lanier oak tree located on Jekyll Island here in Georgia. I printed the picture on a recycled file folder and added the proverb. I bought this frame for $1.00 at an estate sale. It was shiny gold and I didn’t like that color. I had some Rustoleum heirloom white spray paint and gave it a couple of coats. After the frame dried, I centered the oat tree picture on the frame back. I then hot glued two fall colored leaves to the frame. I had a remnant of jute rope and tied the acorns together and hot glued them to the frame too. Sorry I didn’t take more photos. I got so involved in finishing this project and just forgot to photograph the steps. Anyway, It is now hanging in one of the bedrooms upstairs. Here is the final piece.

I just love my little acorns! Hope this inspires you to use something you have in your “stash.” Let me know what you think. Would love for you Hometalkers to check out my other projects and see what I have done with more unusual items.

Thanks for taking time to comment. I so hate to toss anything I can use. It’s in my genes. Lol. Thanks for your kind words.

I'm the same way. I have boxes, food containers, and coffee cans of things I just can't part with. I'm afraid if I throw something out I'll need it the next day.

I totally understand about the angst of parting with something. I have a variety of holders of stuff too.
