How to Make a Succulent Wreath
Have you been intrigued by succulent wreaths? I love the ombre effect of this one I made so I am sharing the how-to with you today.
Succulents are low-maintenance and thrive in even the smallest amount of sunlight. They don’t need much water and are perfect for the heat of summer. Don’t know much about succulents? No worries. Succulents are hardy plants that require very little care. Let me show you how I made this gorgeous ombre succulent wreath.

What You Need To Make a Succulent Wreath
About 50 small succulents (I used a 12″ wreath form)
One 10″ – 12″ wire wreath form (it needs to be curved to hold the moss and plants)
Fishing line or floral wire
Two bags of sphagnum moss
How to Make a Succulent Wreath
I highly suggest you use cuttings from larger succulents if you have them. Succulents can be expensive so shop around. The small ones are always $1.00 each at the flea markets so I always pick up a few every time I see them. Fortunately, I already owned almost all of the succulents I used to make the wreath.
For this wreath, I wanted to create an ombre effect with the colors of the succulents, so I did need to buy a few new succulents to fill in the colors!
This is the wreath form that I used. Make sure you get one that is curved to hold the moss and plants. Flip it over and get prepared to get your hands dirty!
12″ Wire Wreath Frame, Pack of 2
I used two bags of Sphagnum moss. Wet the moss so that it sticks together and place it inside the wreath form. Don’t pack it too tight as you will need room for the succulent roots.

Once you have filled in the wreath form with moss, wrap the form with wire to hold the moss in the form. Leave at least an inch between each wire so it is easy to insert the succulents.

Turn the form back over so the curved edge is facing up. Using a pencil, make a hole for the succulent and insert the root into the moss. Once you have three or four in the moss, start securing them with a piece of wire. Wrap it carefully around the wreath, being careful not to pull off the leaves of the succulent plants. Continue all the way around the wreath form.

I love grouping the succulents by color but you can certainly arrange them however you want!
Be careful to secure the succulents so that they stay pretty much within the outline of the wreath form. I actually had to go back and tie the yellow succulents again as they were a bit “unruly”.
Once you are done, give the wreath a good misting spray of water.

You can hang the wreath or leave it flat on a surface. Just make sure it gets sun and a light misting of water every few weeks.
How to Care For Your Succulent Wreath
How long do succulents last?
The wreath will change over time and can last up to 5 years. At the time the wreath is getting overgrown, it can be pruned into cuttings and the cuttings can be used to plant a new wreath frame.
How often do you need to water succulents?
Consider the natural habitat of succulents. Dry and arid, these environments often go weeks, months, and (very rarely) years without a good watering. But when it rains, it pours and saturates the soil, allowing a replenishing of the succulent’s stores of water
How can you tell if succulents need water?
Unlike other houseplants, you only need to water your succulents once or twice a month, depending on where the plant is located. Overwatering is usually the problem. If your succulents are soft, mushy, and have translucent leaves they are likely overwatered. If the overwatering continues, the leaves will start to rot and you will see them turn black. Don’t water until the soil is completely dry.
Should you spray succulents with water?
YOu can spray them. Succulents and cactus do not need moist and humid conditions. They need a good and thorough drink of water all the way through and then nothing! No matter how much you want to water them, spray them, don’t until soil is dry again!
I love live plants that don’t need a lot of TLC. Succulents are the best!
