Linen, Burlap and Cable Knit Pumpkin Pillow

In this post I show you how to make a decorative pillow for fall. You can make this with materials you have on hand, and they certainly don't have to be the same materials I used. Be creative and make your own pumpkin pillow!

For this pillow I used some linen remnants I had from another project. I also had some soft burlap and an acrylic infinity scarf. You could use any fabrics you have that would compliment your decor.

For the pumpkin, make a rough pumpkin shape out of paper. No need to go all perfectionist on this, just do the grade school heart trick. Fold a paper in half and trace half of a pumpkin instead of half of a heart. Now, cut it out and trace it onto the burlap piece about an inch or so wider than the actual shape.

Cut out your pumpkin shape. After it is cut, I use a product called wonder-under. With this you can turn any fabric into an iron on. You iron the wonder under onto the back side of the fabric and then iron it onto your pillow cover.

For the cover, you will either need to make a pillow cover or buy a plain one. I made mine out of some leftover linen I had. I did an envelope pillow. I make my envelope pillows from one piece of fabric. You cut the strip of fabric a bit wider than your pillow form and more than two times as long. Hem the ends where they will wrap around and then stitch up your sides, right sides together. Turn it right side out and you have a simple pillow cover. Alternatively you could buy a plain cover from Ikea or Hobby Lobby.

After ironing the burlap onto the pillow cover, I like to do a zig-zag stitch around the pumpkin shape with my sewing machine. It keeps the fabric from fraying and gives a more finished look. I did the stem separately so I could make it the shape I wanted.

Before you cut the cable knit, it is a good idea to zig-zag stitch all around the shape as well. Then when you go to cut it out it will not unravel and fray as badly.

Next you just hot glue the cable knit to the burlap.

Make sure to glue very well around the edges to keep the fraying minimal.

Next stuff your pillow with a down or polyester pillow form. Arrange it nicely, and enjoy your simple handmade decor! More details and pictures are on my blog at The Everyday Farmhouse
