How do you trim pine cone petals so they lay flat?

I am trying to make acorn decorations with the bottom part as folded fabric and the top part with pine cone petals. I have a real problem getting the petals to lie flat on the form. Either the front or the back are not flat enough to fit on the layer below and above. How do I fix this? Thank you.

Hello! If it something that you saw in a Hometalk posted project, ask your question on that precise post.

This is a general Q&A posting area, the person who's project you're asking about would likely be unaware of your question about their project post. To get an answer about a specific post, ask the question directly below the project that will likely get you a reply from the Hometalk

It’s hard to provide a solution if we’re not sure what the project looks like in the end. I am guessing to make the pinecone parts lie flat you have to cut and remove them and glue them —-individually—- on your curved surface or cup.

Thank you for the valuable details that is very helpful.

So having a pinecone with the long petals might be the best option —-consider the pinecones that are longer in length. I would use wire nippers to clip off the petals and glue them on your cap or cup

  • You could try soaking them in water and then putting weight on them while they dry. Although, they may just return to their original shape afterwards.

Natural probably won’t work. You might have to use faux cones.

It is a little difficult to understand your project. What sort of 'end' are you wanting to cover with pine cone petals?

Posting a picture of your materials would instantly show what you are working with.

Here some pics. This a picture of the one I finished. I am not happy with how the petals stick out from the form. What do you think?

      Hi Nancy,

Thank you for the picture. That is most helpful, as now we can see exactly what your project is.

I am wondering if perhaps you tried to glue the petals on upside down to how you have these ones glued on, over top of the flat end of the petal, if that might help to give you the look that you are wanting to achieve?

(I rotated the picture upside down and the petals looked flatter to me than how they do now right side up.)

Sand them down to the size and shap you need they are like wood. Just use a piece of sand paper to do it by hand.

  • I have seen people soak them and then reform them. Not sure if that is an option or if you've tried that before.

  • I did a project where I soaked them then put them in the oven and they become rather 'soft' after being heated (it was only 200 F), maybe you could do that and put them under a heavy object to flatten.

Have you tried a steam iron??
