How can I dye pine cones with food coloring?

Just soak them in water that is pre-colored with food color. That is how I do it.

  enough water to cover them all (depends on size and number) and add enough to get the color you like. I err on the light side and go darker. I often use the whole red food color. I love mine very red

  Should the pinecones be fresh? I tried to dye my old pinecones that I have had for years and they aren't very red. I used a lot of food coloring.

  The older and drier the more they soak up the dye, fresh ones might dye easier. I never had trouble dying mine, they were from the same season as my project though

If that doesn't work, just use the food color dye as a paint

2 L of water to 1 ounce red food coloring soak it overnight I believe above she was saying if the color is not what you want you can use the dye directly on the cone to darken it
