Survive the "After Christmas Blues" With Easy Winter Decorating

I'm always sad when I have to take down my holiday decorations. But with just a few added touches, you can transition into the late winter season with your decorating!
I recently took up basket making as a new hobby. I made this hanging satchel in my last class, and have enjoyed filling it with different items for the different seasons. I've hung it on the wall to welcome visitors to my home.

Although I made this basket, you could buy or find a similar basket: consider a fishermen's basket, a small mail basket, or a wicker bicycle basket.
For fall, I filled my basket with a grapevine wreath, some artificial leaves and flowers, and a little wooden star decoration.
For the Christmas season, I swapped out the wreath for this painted wooden star. I added some red and green Christmas ornaments and a few other holiday decorations I had around the house. And I kept the same wooden star tucked in among the goodies.
After Christmas, I wasn't really sure what I should put in the basket. I knew I wanted to take down my Christmas stuff and pack it away, but it seemed too early to fill the basket with spring items.

I knew I wanted to keep my white star on display and I thought dried eucalyptus in its muted green and red would look good with the purple reed in my basket. I also thought this color combination would be appropriate for the late winter season. I was able to buy a bunch of eucalyptus at Michaels in a bundle of both colors. I cut my greenery in length to fit in my basket.

Then as I was taking out my Christmas items, I realized the red berries and pine cone from my holiday display would fit nicely with my star and eucalyptus. I like the pop of color that the red berries add against the other muted colors. And, of course, I tucked in my little star decoration again.

I love this display for the cold months of winter. I think it might be my favorite so far!
