The short days and weak light of winter always have me feeling like I’m missing out on the beauty of nature. So I look for small ways to bring nature indoors - especially around the holidays.

Last year, when it came time to wrap my holiday gifts, I shopped my own garden for natural materials to use as “bows” and other package decorations. It was a fun little scavenger hunt, and these natural package adornments were easy to make, unique, and nature friendly. And they cost me almost nothing.

So today, I’m sharing my favorite: The boxwood package mini-wreath.

For the one I made, I used short twigs from our boxwood hedge for a buttoned-up little wreath that measured just 5 1/2 inches in diameter.

I started by bending 19-gauge steel wire into a 3 1/2-inch diameter circle. (Since I was working with wire, I wore gloves.)

I cut the boxwood sprigs to two-inch lengths.

Then I took two to three sprigs of the boxwood and wrapped them together at the base base with thin, brass-colored beading wire, creating little bundles.

Then, using the same beading wire, I attached the bundles evenly to the wire circle. Every time I added a new bundle, I made sure to overlap it a bit with the bundle next to it to conceal the wire.

I did have to work with it for a while to get it right, and I tucked in additional boxwood sprigs where it still looked thin.

Then I tied it up with a bow made of narrow cloth ribbon.

Simple, and it looked so nice on the package.

It was fun to group it with other natural package adornments for a theme.

But it could also be used as an ornament.

This little wreath is so easy to make, and it could be made using rosemary instead of boxwood - or even short evergreen clippings.

And the best part: It's earth-friendly. Once the wire is removed, the boxwood springs can be composted.

For the cost, I estimated $10, the approximate cost of the wire. But it depends on what materials you already have on hand. Since I had the wire, boxwood sprigs, and ribbon already on hand, it was free.
