Drop Cloth Rag Wreath

This is a fun and easy project. I used a drop cloth, to get a rustic, rag finish but any material would work.

I think denim would be awesome. You could repurpose old jeans or flannel shirts for a no cost project as well.

Cut drop cloth into strips

Using a rotary cutting system, I cut the drop cloth material into long strips.

  1. Place the drop cloth material onto the cutting mat.
  2. Place cutting guide onto your fabric
  3. Place rotary cutter into correct groove and roll away.

I cut my strips 1 1/2 inches wide. This is strictly personal preference. But, if they are too wide they can be hard to tie!

Because drop cloth material is thick, I rolled back and forth several times to ensure it had cut all the way through.

I was lucky enough to be given my rotary cutting system by my mother in law, but you can use a yardstick, cloth marker, and scissors to do this with out one.

Cut the long strips into short pieces

At this point you will have long strips of material. Using scissors, cut them into four or five inch sections.

The length is determined by how full and fluffy you want your wreath to be. I needed my wreath to fit between our wooden door and our storm door, so I kept my sections on the short side.

You will need lots of these strips to make your wreath. It will take at least 1/2 your drop cloth material, possibly more depending on the size of your wreath form.

Tie your strips onto your wreath form

This is the easy part. Simply tie your strips onto your form. I used a single knot so that the ends would be longer. If you fold your strips in half lengthwise, they will be easy to slide in between the rings and easier to tie.

Push the knots together to make room for the most strips you can on each ring. The more knots you tie, the fuller your wreath will be.

Repeat for all the rings on your wreath form. Pull your ends to the front of the wreath, fluffing and straightening as you go. The knots should be on the back side. This creates your ruffle, or rag wreath. You can trim if desired, I like mine rustic and not too perfect.

Embellish and Enjoy!

I added a cute little Welcome sign to the center of my wreath, but you can add floral picks, and ribbon as well. The possibilities are endless.

I hope you enjoy this project as much as i I did!! Iā€™m considering making a few more using different fabrics! What fabric will you choose?
