Simple DIY Door Basket
Spring has returned to the Midwest, and I could not be more excited! I spent some time this weekend soaking up the sun, planting a few flowers, and sprucing up our front porch.
Our current wreath was looking sad and faded, so I decided to replace it. I knew I wanted something that was not traditional in terms of door decor and immediately began to scroll Pinterest for ideas.
During my scrolling, I was drawn to the idea of a door basket with flowers. How beautiful are these inspiration photos?

Today, I’m sharing how I put my spin on a spring door basket with this simple DIY. It’s a budget-friendly project that anyone can do and a perfect way to add a touch of spring to your home. Make one for yourself, or make one for a friend. It would make a great Mother’s Day gift, too! Here are the supplies you need to make your own.
Supplies
- Door basket
- Potting soil (if you are using real flowers)
- Flowers
- Spanish moss
How To Make A Simple DIY Spring Door Basket
1. Pick Your Basket
I started my basket search by looking at local thrift stores, but I didn’t have any luck. So, online shopping it was!
I fell in love with the shape of this door basket. It can be used indoors or out and also comes in multiple colors.
You can save money by using a basket that you already have. But, if you don’t have one at home, thrift stores and garage sales are good places to find cheap baskets that are great for DIY projects like this one. (And…if your thrift shopping trip is a bust like mine, there is always the internet!)
2. Select Your Flowers
Because my basket is lined with plastic, I decided to try making my DIY door basket with real spring flowers. I have been (im)patiently waiting to get outside and plant, and this project was a great way to scratch my flower-planting itch. Risky? Maybe. But to me, it was worth it.
I have been on a bit of purple kick lately, so I went to a local home and garden store with my daughter to find some purple pansies. After we started looking at all of the flowers, I remembered that the front of our house faces west. Pansies prefer cooler weather. I knew the full heat of the afternoon sun would be too much for them, and with our temps starting to heat up, they wouldn’t last long.
Instead, I picked some more hardy sun-loving varieties, including trailing petunias, bacopa flowers, and trailing vines.
NOTE: You can use faux flowers if you prefer, especially if you plan to hang your spring door basket inside. There is always a great selection at craft stores like Michael’s and Hobby Lobby. And, if you wait for a sale, you can usually get them at a great price!
3. Add Soil
Next, I removed my flowers from the pots and carefully placed them in the basket.
I moved them around until I found an arrangement that fit the best.
Then I filled the basket with some extra soil and lightly patted down the flowers to make sure they were firmly in place.
NOTE: If you are using faux flowers, trim the stems to length as needed using some wire cutters. Instead of soil, use recycled plastic bags or old newspapers to fill in the basket and give the flowers some height.
4. Top With Spanish Moss
To finish the basket, I tucked some Spanish moss in between the plants.
And that’s it! This spring door basket is such a simple DIY.
I love how it looks on our front door, and I can’t wait to try this project again for future seasons!

I love this idea! It is so beautiful but I have a hard time keeping the birds out of my wreaths hanging on my door, so I can only imagine what they would do to a basket on my door!
However, I think that this hanging basket idea is so adorable that I may put one of these in my house with faux flowers for spring and summer. 😊🌸

Yes. I've been lucky to not have any issues with birds. I also did a basket this fall with faux florals, too. I'm sure one made for the indoors for spring would be beautiful!

You didn't use a liner in the basket? The soil would leave a mess when you watered wouldn't it?....maybe I missed something
