These Christmas gnomes are popular all over Scandinavia not just Norway. But as my husbands family is from Norway we call them Norwegian Gnomes and decorate our home with them at Christmas time.

They are so easy to make and cost almost nothing as they are made from repurposed materials. I love to make a little family of gnomes for my Christmas mantle. The will sit alongside the super cute elves I have made before.

All you need to make these gnomes is an old branch. You want one that is thick enough to stand up on its end when cut to about 20cm in height.

Old woolen sweaters felted on a hotwash in the washing machine. Or you can use craft felt instead. Fake fur, I used the fur from an old waistcoat. Felt ball or wooden beads for their noses. Optional bells for the hats.

The first thing to do is to saw the branches so they are flat one end and at a 45 degree angle at the other. I cut 3 branches in 3 different lengths between 10-15cm

Next make a simple felt hat for each gnome. The base of the hat needs to be just wide enough to fit around the branch. Cut a simple triangle shape.

Fold the felt for the hat in half and stitch or glue the ends together. Add a bell to the tip of the hat.

Place the hat on the top of the branch.

Next glue on the nose.

Then cut a triangle of faux fur (like this one here) to make a beard and glue this to the branch with a hot glue gun.

Repeat with the other branches until you have a trio of gnomes. (More photos on the blog link at the end)

You can actually make these gnomes any size you want. I think some large ones made with logs would look great in front of the fireplace.
