3D Snowflake: DIY Winter Decor

Christmas and Winter decor does not have to cost you a fortune! While perusing the stores this year for decor we were inspired by so many items - unfortunately they weren't in the budget. However, using this inspiration we created a 3D Snowflake Decor piece that is not only detailed but super easy to create. Check out more awesome posts like this at www.diyjustcuz.com
The materials for this project were easy to come by and inexpensive. You will need: chalk paint, chipboard sheets, patterned card stock / scrapbook paper, a wood plaque, sticky foam squares and your silhouette (or scissors if you'll be cutting by hand!).
If you have a Silhouette (or similar electronic cutting machine) bring it out and start cutting out your snowflakes. We loved using ours because it was so easy to cut out the intricate details but if you do not have one, never fear. You can use a straight edge or scissors to cut out snowflakes - it might take a little more time but the result is the same.
You will want to cut out a variety of styles - remember as they say - no snowflake is the same so the more unique the better!
Cut more snowflakes from your patterned paper as well.
Now that the snowflakes are cut, you will want to paint the wood plaque so it can dry as you assemble the 3D art. First we painted the whole plaque white (white snow is the epitome of Winter, after all). Finally we sprayed the plaque with paint to give it a pop of color!
While the plaque dried, we assembled the 3D snowflakes. Using the sticky foam pieces we layered several snowflakes one on top of the other. We did not want it to lie flat on the wood so the last snowflake had to have another sticky foam piece as well.
We added a few more of the unique snowflakes, rotating them and making sure they all popped and shined through.
The view from the side looks a little wonky but that's not what anyone will be looking at anyway! It just shows the gorgeous dimensions.
Here is the final result - honestly, it's gorgeous and matches our decor so well!
This project was easy, quick and the result looks so professional. We totally could have spent the money to buy this from the store but making it ourselves was so much more satisfying! How have you DIY'd your Winter decor?
