I’ve been wanting to go more modern and neutral with our Christmas decor, but I never want to spend a ton of money. Instead, I looked through some “outdated” pieces that I hadn’t used in a few years, and decided to use some paint to give them a makeover. When I found this old nutcracker and reindeer, I knew they were perfect pieces to be upgraded.

What I Used:

Outdated Christmas Decor

Sand paper

Spray paint

Rub n Buff

Step 1: Prep your pieces

For the nutcracker, I broke him down as much as I could. I removed his fuzzy hat, and his arms and bagpipes. This gave me the easiest surface to work with. Next I gave all of the pieces a light sanding.

For the reindeer, I used a plastic scraper and peeled off as much of the chipping paint as I could. Next I gave him a light sanding too.

Step 2: Spray paint

I sprayed both pieces totally black to start. When using spray paint, use multiple light coats to avoid any drips.

Once everything dried, I used some rub n buff to make the nutcrackers bagpipes and buttons gold. I applied this with a napkin.

Step 3: Reassemble and display

To finish it off, I reattached all of the nutcracker’s pieces, and now they’re both ready to display!

They are much more my style now - neutral and simple. I’m always so amazed by the power of paint!

I am still debating on covering the whole reindeer in rub n buff to make him gold, but I’m undecided. What do you think?
