Christmas Sign From an Old Fence Board

Come see how easy it is to create a beautiful and vibrant Christmas sign from an old fence board! I hung this on my porch above my door, but it could be used anywhere you need a pop of Christmas cheer!

A Silhouette machine isn't necessary to create a sign like this. I'll direct you to another post where I show how to use your own printer to cut out the stencil you'll need. Let's get started!

Supplies you'll need:

  1. an old fence board
  2. a sander or sandpaper block
  3. red paint
  4. white chalk paint
  5. black paint
  6. brushes, including a stencil brush
  7. stencil, either created on Silhouette machine or printed from your home printer (see how to do that here)

Start by sanding the board well to smooth it. Wipe off the dust and then paint with 2 coats of red paint. I used acrylic paint, but you can use chalk paint or leftover house paint or whatever you have on hand.

To create more of a weathered sign, leave a little of the original wood showing through the red paint.

Set aside to dry.

Create your stencil. You DO NOT NEED a Silhouette or Cricut to make this sign, although it does come in handy! Check the link above if you want to create your stencil using your home printer.

Once you have your stencil ready to go, adhere it to the sign board.

If you'd like a FREE PDF of my Joy to the World sign, you can grab that here.

Next, paint your stencil with white chalk paint.

Here are some TIPS for getting the BEST RESULTS:

  • always use a stencil brush
  • blot off paint from brush so it's not saturated
  • don't drag brush; rather, pounce paint onto stencil in an up and down motion (this will ensure crisp, clean lines)
  • stencil from the outside of the letter to the inside to help keep paint from sliding under your stencil

Use a fine-tipped craft brush to create shadows with black paint.

This before and after shows you the impact that painting the black shadows will make to your sign...the letters really POP!

Let sign dry and top it with a clear coat of wax or poly to protect it. Then hang up. We lightly tacked it above our front door using 2 small nails.
