DIY Wooden Christmas Tree

I was looking for a new project to do and because Christmas is just around the corner I went with a Christmas craft project. This would be a great project to do with the kids.
I used 10mm plywood for my project only because that was what I had left over from another project, but any wood can be used.  I started by cutting my plywood into 100mm stripes which is the depth of my shelves.   I glued the top together and used a clamp to keep the joins together.  Then I got bored watching the glue dry so I used a nail gun to secure the join so I could continue.  If you don”t have a nail gun, enjoy watching the glue dry.
I am not very good at following drawings so I made it up as I was going along.  My top triangle was cut at a 45 degree angle and the rest can be done using a 30 degree angle.  I did do some at 45 degrees at the bottom but found I was just creating work for myself.    I was taking step by step photos, but when I went to check them later I found I had been taking some not to flattering  selfies, so I have attached a diagram (very basic sorry) of my dimensions if you want to use them.  After making the top shelf I decided to keep the sides all the same length just to keep it easy to make.  I did glue all my joins and used a nail gun just so I could complete my project in one afternoon.  I used a table saw to cut all my angles
Once I had all my shelves glued I added a thin sheet of MDF so the Christmas decorations would not fall out. I had planned all along to glue some of the ornaments to the back to make it look fuller.   I lay the shelf on top of the MDF and traced the outline so I could cut it out and attached it to the back.  Saying that I would not recommend using MDF because I had a lot of problems getting paint to stick to it, so a very thin veneer would work great.  I used a nail gun to attach the back, but glue or nails would work just fine.
I used my unicorn spit white paint in the end to paint the shelf then added a silver glitter paint on top, but that does not show up very well in the pictures.  Then for the fun bit, adding all my Christmas decorations.  I had accumulated lots over the years, mine were mainly Christmas tree decorations.
I used a hot glue gun to secure all the decorations so they would not be falling over all the time. This project is very hard for me to put a cost to because all my materials were recycled or I had them already.

    • Thanks Tracey, you can go and get the plain christmas balls to add a photo in for your new tree. I made some great christmas balls that can be painted on one side and a photo on the other. If you look on my page you will see them. Have a great Christmas.

I was a teacher and received quite a few ornaments over the years. This is a lovely way that I can display them! Thanks. Merry Christmas.
