Cinnamon Star Garland

It's so simple to make these long-lasting holiday "cookie" decorations; using only 3 ingredients that you probably have in your pantry already.
It's only one small step further to turn them into a sweet-smelling garland that will charm for years to come.

Mix together 1 full cup of cinnamon, 3/4 cup of applesauce, and 2 tablespoons of Elmer's Glue. Start with a wooden spoon, but eventually you'll want to thoroughly knead the dough with your hands to be sure that everything is evenly mixed.
Use a rolling pin to flatten your dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Be sure to sprinkle a little extra cinnamon on the work surface so your dough doesn't stick.
Use a star shaped cookie cutter to press out your shapes and lay them on a cookie sheet.
Use a simple drinking straw to poke holes in the arms of the stars. If you want to hang them solo, only poke one hole. But if you're really daring, and I'm willing to bet that you are, poke a hole into 2 of the arms on each star.
You can let them air dry in a few days, but if you're impatient like me, pop them into a 200 degree oven for a few hours. 2 hours should be enough, but possibly a little longer depending on how thick they are. You'll want them to be rock solid.
Use a ribbon to thread your star cookies together. Drape your sweet-smelling star garland anyplace you need a little holiday cheer. Like across the mantle.

They look great, and I'll bet they smell very nice, too. How long do they last? Could you use them for more than one Christmas?

Hi can other spices work? If so what ones?

  • Fanny Fanny on Dec 21, 2019

I've seen this idea elsewhere, but the recipe did not call for applesauce. Why the applesauce? Would the recipe without it not work? Thanks.
