DIY Christmas Tree Made of Firefly Lights
We thought we would come up with an alternative DIY Christmas tree that wowed without all the fuss. And after we dropped by the Christmas tree lot and saw how much a tree would cost, we knew we could do better. We had gotten inspired by beautiful outdoor light displays, and alternative Christmas trees we see every December in high end resorts and hotels. So, we got to work to make a simple DIY Christmas tree made of firefly lights! Here is how you can make one too, for around $60!
These are the firefly lights we got from ‘Amazon‘. (Also called fairy lights!) They were $49.99 when we bought them. We bought a 1000 light string that was 328 feet long. It allowed us to make a seamless tree with our 9 foot ceiling.
We made the base out of MDF. Cut a circle out of a 4 ft by 4 ft piece of wood.
We put small cup hooks spaced out evenly all the way around. And then a larger cup hook in the ceiling.
We then alternated feeding the firefly lights from bottom to top until we had completed the enitire tree all the way around! You probably will want to check out our blog post for details on this!
Make sure you gently pull the firefly light wires taut between each hook. Gently!
You can then also decorate the base to your preference!
And now we have the best DIY Christmas tree we ever made, using only firefly lights! This tree is so pretty, you don’t need ornaments! The photos don’t do it justice. The lights magically glow off every reflective surface in the room.

Very very pretty. Live Christmas light but prefer the softness of fairy lights so this is right up my alley. First look and I can easily see a nativity inside and maybe a star at top. So this clearly can stand on its own or embellished as you prefer. Nice design. Thanks for sharing

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Sorry, how far apart did you space your cup hooks in the mdf base? I pad typed the wrong word for mdf and I didnt catch it before I sent the question. TIA
How did you get it to light? You didn't mention any electrical instructions.
What was in the middle to hold it together or was it hook to the ceiling or did you have a little pole or something?
