Turn an ordinary Christmas house into a Farmhouse Christmas Village with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint as the star of the show. I used Miss Mustard Seed’s Tricycle Red, Boxwood Green, and Farmhouse White to embrace the traditional Christmas color palette. I kept the design very simple to mimic a primitive farmhouse feel, and to showcase the beauty of the paint. Happy Christmas crafting!

I have wanted to personalize a Christmas Village for a while. Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint (affiliate link) was the first paint that came to mind when painting one. Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint has a way of adding a unique and vintage charm to any piece.

I used Miss Mustard Seed’s Tricycle Red, Boxwood Green, and Farmhouse White to embrace the traditional Christmas color palette. I kept the design very simple to mimic a primitive farmhouse feel, and to showcase the beauty of the paint. Milk paint’s patina provides the perfect farmhouse feel that these houses are calling for. However, you can add as many details as you would like. Just have fun with it!

New to Milk Paint?

Beginning your milk paint endeavors with smaller projects like this is a great place to start. I love painting furniture with milk paint, but it can be intimidating. The key is to just have fun! Milk paint is very forgiving and you really can’t go wrong.

Before we start, I created this video a couple of months ago showcasing how I updated a thrifted Windsor chair using Miss Mustard Seed’s Arabesque. It may be helpful if you are new to milk paint.

To make your own farmhouse Christmas village, you will need:

  • Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Tricycle
  • Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Farmhouse White
  • Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Boxwood
  • Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Typewriter
  • Paper Mache Houses (affiliate link)
  • Miss Mustard Seed's Zinc Wax
  • Miniature Wreaths
  • Beacon's Power-Tac
  • Miniature Whisk
  • Paintbrush
  • Cup for Mixing
  • Measuring Cup

Step 1: Mix the paint.

Mix 1 part paint powder to 1 part water.

I always recommend starting with less so you don’t waste your product. You can always make more paint later. A little bit of milk paint goes a long way!

Whisk the paint together with the water until the paint is fully integrated into the water.

I have found that a miniature whisk is the best mixing tool to ensure the milk powder stays fully integrated into the water.

Your paint mixture should look like a thin pancake batter once it is mixed.

Step 2: Paint one thin layer of milk paint to the paper mache boxes.

For this project I used Tricycle, Farmhouse White, and Boxwood to create the traditional Christmas color palette.

*I applied one coat of paint with Tricycle and Boxwood. I applied two coats of paint with Farmhouse White for better coverage.

Continue to cover the entire outside of the paper house with milk paint.

You can tape off the edges or cut in the paint with a paintbrush.

Continue to paint all the way to the roof.

Paint the chimneys the same color as the house.

Step 3: Paint the roofs in Miss Mustard Seed’s Typewriter.

Let it dry.

Step 4: Once dry, use a wax brush to apply Miss Mustard Seed’s zinc wax to the roof to add a beautiful sheen and patina.

I love how the zinc wax gives the roof an almost tin-like feel.

Step 5: Use Beacon’s Power-Tac to attach the miniature wreaths directly to the houses for added charm.

Step 6: Place battery operated tea lights inside the houses, and display your Christmas village for all to enjoy!

I just love how these houses turned out. I hope you enjoy making them as much as I did!
