I love Christmas garland (all kinds), but it can get expensive adding to your collection. I decided to DIY some and make it budget friendly.

Making your own garland is actually pretty simple and easy to change up if you decide you don't like what you did. If you can tie a knot...you can create your own garland.

This tutorial will show you 3 different garlands I made for the holiday season using jingle bells. I hope they inspire you to try making your own garland too.

MATERIAL LIST:

  • Large Jingle Bells
  • Small Jingle Bells
  • Ornaments (old or new)
  • Twine/Jute
  • Ribbon
  • Burlap
  • Beads
  • Fabric (optional)
  • Scissors

TIP- Raid your Christmas decor and pull out anything you can give new life to! This DIY can be as budget friendly as you want! You can use ornaments instead of jingle bells. Vintage ornaments would be amazing too!!!

The first thing I did was decide which ribbon I wanted to use for my garland. I laid that out with my tape measure and placed how many jingle bells I wanted and how many inches I wanted them spaced out. I spaced mine out 12" apart.

I cut my twine and then thread it through the top of the bell. Slip one end of the twine under the ribbon and one on top. Then simply tie a knot, I decided to double knot my bells. Once they were all tied on I decided the jingle bells were rather large for the thinner ribbon I had chosen.

So, I decided to layer the thinner ribbon and bells on top of a burlap wired ribbon that was thicker and had a bit more structure.

Lay the ribbon on top of the burlap. Using the twine that holds the bell to the ribbon, pinch the burlap and tie the bell & ribbon to the burlap.

This is what that looks like once the bells are tied on. I also cut the ends on an angle to give it more of a finished look.

The 2nd Garland I made only took 3 materials.

  • Premade Bead Garland
  • Jingle bells (or any ornaments you want to use)
  • Twine

I used a premade bead garland because I had it on hand. You could also make your own bead garland.

Cut your twine. I made mine about 5 inches so I could easily tie knots. Excess can always be cut off. Take your twine and thread it through the top of the bell.

My specific garland was premade so I counted the beads to keep my bells evenly spaced. Another addition you could make to this garland would be strips of fabric. Flannel would add more texture and color. Drop cloth strips would also add more texture to a neutral color theme.

The 3rd garland I made used three materials also but is the easiest...and was free for me!

  • Old Red Jingle bells I found in my Christmas stash
  • Red jute twine
  • Tape measure

I wasn't sure how long to make this garland because I only have 9 old bells so I decided to cut my twine at 9 foot.

The first bell I put on I thread the twine through the top of the bell and tied it at the center of the garland, 4.5 feet.

TIP- It is easier to start from the middle and work towards the end. I simply tied each bell into place.

I decided I wanted my red jingle bells to be 8 inches apart and used a tape measure to help keep them evenly spaced. Once they are all tied into place make a loop and tie the end so you can easily hang it.

I'm so excited to start decorating for Christmas! I may have to start even earlier this year.
