DIY Wood Box Stocking Holder

Oh, how I longed for a mantel to decorate every season when we were searching for a home. But, that didn't work out so now for the holidays I like to decorate the pass-through we created in a wall connecting our living room and kitchen.

This year I couldn't wait to hang our new stockings but I wanted to make something I could change out, decorate and maybe even use for other holidays to hang our stockings from.
I searched our scrap wood pile and found some 1x6 pine boards, and cut them to my desired length.
Using a nail gun, a box was formed. I didn't care about nail holes or rough edges. I wanted the box to look rustic and imperfect.
After it was done I painted it white, distressed with sanding and attached hooks on one side to hang the stockings from.
After looking at it, it didn't look rustic enough and the yellow pine was starting to show through. So I gave it a quick once over with Valspar's antiquing wax and it looked perfectly imperfect.
I love my new stocking "box". I can change out the decorations on the inside for the theme I am going for and even use it for different holidays. Can't you see little heart garland hanging from the hooks for Valentines Day?
