My neighbor asked me if I wanted tongue and groove wood scraps from the ceiling project he was doing. I went to look and they weren’t long enough so I said I’d take them for the woodstove to burn. The next day I came up to the building where the woodstove is and looked at the pile of scraps and said to myself, “Wait a minute, I have an idea!”

I took them outside and sanded down the rough edges.

Then, I took wood glue and started putting them together.

They weren’t very secure so I thought OK I’ll try a staple gun on the backside. Well, the staples weren’t wide enough to span between both boards. You’ll see what I did below to take care of that.

Next, I turned it over and took stain that I had from IKEA and using a foam brush I painted it on and then wiped it off with a rag.

For the trunk, I took some Burnt Umber paint that I had and just squeezed it on and using the same stain foam brush, I blended it in.

I wanted it to stand up, so I took a lath strip and brushed on the same green stain. Then I added a hinge at the top and a chain at the bottom so it could stand upright.

Well, that was not very sturdy so I got a thicker cedar board to use instead. I used the lath sticks on the back to make it more secure also. Remember those staples and glue just weren’t gonna cut it!

Here it is all stained green.

I thought it needed something more so I dry brushed some white paint on. Well, this wasn’t enough either.

So, I took it outside and dipped my brush into the paint and splattered it. This was much better. There are so many ways to go with this. Add balls, or lights, or clips to show off your Christmas cards. The possibilities are endless.

For me, I just added a simple star to the top. I love it! Hope you do too!
