Fun Patchwork Denim Stars Decoration

I keep all my family's old jeans and upcycle them for things around the home. I even use repurposed denim to make Christmas decorations like my very popular denim Christmas trees (see them here).

This time I used my denim scraps to make these patchwork stars that can be hung as a decoration or even used as trivets on the table.

For this project, I used scraps of denim from different pairs of jeans. I wanted denim in different shades of indigo.

Did you know you can make a star shape out of six diamonds? I used a diamond template for my stars (free to download from the blog link in bio at the end).

Draw around the diamond shape on the wrong side of scraps of denim.

Cut out the diamond shapes, you will need six for each patchwork star.

Arrange the denim diamonds to make a star shape.

Then pin them right sides together into 3 pairs and stitch them along one side.

Then stitch these three shapes together to make a star.

To neaten up the center of the star add a button from an old pair of jeans.

Draw around the star on some scrap fabric to make a backing.

Stitch the backing fabric to the patchwork star and turn it right sides out. Use a pencil or chopstick to poke out the corners.

Then stuff the star with fiberfill before sewing shut. I used the fiber from old pillows to stuff my stars.

Then quilt the star by stitching across each diamond shape. Finish off by adding a ribbon loop to hang the stars from.

These stars make a fun decoration. If you want an easier upcycled denim star decoration that requires sewing, check out these scrap fabric rustic stars.

Love the denim stars! I can see doing a Christmas tree with the denim theme and silver! Could be very cabin/farmhouse chic!

If you want the ends of your star to be pointed, (rather than curvier) here are few tips:

-adjust the stitch length to a larger number (more stitches pr length) as you approach the end

-at the end point, leave the needle in the Down position, lift the presser foot, pivot the fabric around, lower the presser foot, then begin sewing again

-trim the seam allowance with sharp scissors, then press flat before turning to right side
