How to Make a Faux Tinsel Tree
I love all things vintage and antique, but my heart is happiest with vintage Christmas. There is something about those tinsel trees, shiny brites, and Santa mugs that just gets me. I don’t ever remember having a tinsel tree, so I am not sure where my facination comes from. We always went to the woods and took turns cutting our “perfect” tree down. And maybe that’s why I love them so much. Because I don’t ever remember having one.
I thoroughly enjoy watching others faces light up and the stories of how they remember their grandparents had a tinsel tree, aka an aluminum tree. I have a 7’ Revlis with the turning tree stand, the color wheel, the whole nine yards. And it just makes my heart so happy!!
With these tinsel trees and the growing popularity of vintage Christmas, the prices are really starting to reflect the demand. That makes these trees an investment, which got me thinking. What could I do to make a faux tinsel tree? Something much more cost effective…
So, here is what you are going to need:
Supplies
- White artificial tree- I used the one from the dollar tree
- Krylon Looking Glass Silver
- decorations
Steps
- Go to a well ventilated area. Outside is best.
- Set up a small table or cardboard to catch overspray
- Shake spray paint well and spray the tree covering all branches
- Make sure to cover the bottom
- Now decorate your little tree using lights, ornaments, or just leave it plain. I just used vintage ornaments and left it simple.
You can add lights, a tree skirt, or leave it simple. The choice is yours! I left mine simple and paired with vintage putz houses and a vintage Santa.

The looking glass spray is expensive and hard to find... but the silver tinsel trees are very easy to find and not expensive....Walmart- biglots-target....to name a few places you can find them
