Counting down to Christmas is always exciting! Here's how to make your own personalized advent calendar, to track the days.
Starting with a few supplies you probably already have in your craft room, you can make your custom advent calendar.

Gather some pieces of felt in various colors, your scissors, a glue gun, and assorted notions. Then you're ready to cut out Christmas shapes to use to mark each day.

You can download the free shape templates that I used for my project on the Single Girl's DIY website: Fun Advent Calendar You Can Make Yourself
1. Cut your shapes
Rough cut the paper templates. Then use a straight pin to secure the shape to your chosen color of felt. Cut around the outline to create your calendar piece.
Once you have your shapes cut out, you can either use them just like this, or add some embellishments.
2. Add embellishments
You can add more dimension to your pieces by cutting extra shapes out of felt, such as eyes, stripes, and accents.

I also scrounged around the house for other notions I could use. I found beads, bells, buttons, and even a tiny bow. Get creative and make them your own.

Use a hot glue gun or craft glue to secure the trimmings in place.
3. Make the calendar backing
I used a piece of black burlap to make the backing.

Cut your fabric to 14" x 16". Fold three edges under 1/4" and stitch to finish. (Or you can leave the edges raw.)

Fold over the top and stitch to make a pocket. Size the pocket to fit a dowel, or a stick, to use for hanging.
4. Trace out the grid
On the back of your fabric, trace out a grid with a piece of chalk.

Make a 5 x 5 grid of 2.5" squares. I used my handy acrylic ruler and cutting mat to make marking this a breeze.
5. Stitch the grid lines
Using yarn and a yarn needle, it's easy to stitch a simple grid onto the burlap.

Following the grid traced on the back, make long stitches on the front of the fabric, and small stitches on the back.
Countdown to Christmas!

Add a piece to your calendar each day, as you count down to Christmas.
