Hello Pawilson41, Our old house had a fireplace with a mantle and I loved decorating it for Christmas. I placed a large item on each end. (One was a big Santa and the other was a large serving dish on an easel. I put garland and lights around them. I left the center blank so that I could hang a large wreath 6 or 8 inches above the mantle. I decorated the wreath with red and gold ornaments and lights too. Hung the stockings from the mantle too. I liked to use large items so that the entire mantle was a focal point. I hope you enjoy decorating your mantle as much as I did. Good luck and Happy Holidays.

Keep it simple...place fresh cuttings of pine or holly branches..add a few candles...a pine cone or two and voila!

Any greenery works. If you have greenery in your yard, clip off some long branches and some short ones to fill in, wash it with a hose if dusty or you live in a warm climate where bugs are still abundant, hang it out to dry and then arrange it on the mantel. If you have a variety of foliage, it will look even better. Add Bows, some sparkling ornaments lay 3 of the same color nestled in the greenery (or different colors), anything you have to add color...even the kids' teddy bears. Or add candles.

If you have kids, gather up their small stuffed animals...even the dog that is missing an ear...and make a "through the years" remembrance mantel.

Aljosjer, I like your idea with large items on the end. Last year we took out our huge two-sided mantle to open up our kitchen and den to make a family room. And I really miss them this year for Christmas decorating.

Pawilson41, some of my favorite mantle decorations have been:

โ€”a large ceramic nativity scene in blue and white, with white lights strung behind and between the figures.

โ€”a similar ceramic nativity scene but this one had a shed for the Baby, Mary, and Joseph to kneed in. I sometimes added plastic greenery around the multi-colored figures.

โ€”all my Christmas miniature churches, with lights and snow across the mantle. i put lights inside some of the churches, too. ๐Ÿ˜‡
