You can wrap them around a cardboard box - I leave them all connected. You could also use old hangers to wrap them around.
I bought a light storage box. It was pretty inexpensive and you can get them from Home Depot and target. Or you can wrap them around a sturdy piece of cardboard and put them in a storage box.
Edward... The carton would work better with single ornaments because most lights will including attached wiring unless I am completely off base with your question. My tree have lights attached and we pack it back each year in the box and even push down branches to help it fit better. I believe you can put your lights in a box and they will be fine. Totes work well also. Hope this helps
