How long do you leave your Christmas tree up?

Do you take down all your decorations at one time or do you leave a few to linger on?

Our tree stays up to the week following new years. We have a fresh cut tree that gets watered every day. It drinks about half gallon every day so it stays pretty fresh. If the tree does not soak up water that fast and stops, It is taken out sooner. Besides our town goes around with a chipper and chips the tree for free if we want it for our gardens. Or they will simply put it into their truck for someone else to use.

Since our children are grown, we celebrate on Christmas Eve and they have Christmas Day with their families. It was raining yesterday (Christmas) and a lazy day, so we decided to clean up the house of the Christmas activities and get the decorations down. We will get the ones outside down as soon as it stops raining and warms up a bit. We do not do as much as we used to and tend to get behind if we do not keep at it...so I guess that is a bit like Scrooge, but what the heck...it works for us. I at least do not have this hanging over my head for weeks and we do not have to stumble over messes!

I'm ready to take mine down this Saturday. The snowmen I leave up til at least the end of January. Used to leave the Christmas village up til January, but it didn't get turned on much because of the new location I put it in this year. Ready for a bright non-holiday house. The last 3 months have been nothing but decorations.

In Louisiana we take Christmas ornaments off and just add Mardi Gras ornaments to it, so ours is after Mardi Gras tradition for us Louisiana folks

I don't really have a traditional time to take our tree and decorations down anymore. I've gotten lazy since our children have grown. It now usually depends on my mood. We've so much else going on in the next week that I'll probably wait to take the trees down until sometime the first week of the new year. I'll leave snowmen and snow angels up until at least the end of January.

What are Mardi Gras ornaments like @Trent-Tonya Sharp ? Do you have pictures? I am not familiar at all with that tradition and would love to find out more.

This is one I googled to show you, we will decorate our New Year Day and take it down after Mardi Gras but you decorate with purple gold and green colors with lots of beads feathers and Mardi Gras Mask. They are very colorful and lots of fun

I learned a long time ago not to rush putting away the tree and the decorations. It takes a few weeks to put it up, enjoy taking it down, remembering the love and meaning for doing it all. If you don't rush, you generally have less mess when it is time to start next year.

I have a tradition of having mine up by Thanksgiving, but I don't light anything up until Thanksgiving night. I always have fall & Thanksgiving decorations out until the day after Thanksgiving. I never want to skip that special day. Then I change those to Christmas deco. I usually leave mine up until Jan. 2. It takes several days to get it down and in storage, I agree with you, Diane B.....don't rush it....embrace it!

Very well said @Diane B. Christmas, to me, is something to be celebrated year round so why rush in putting away our decorations? I would love to find the right nativity to leave up year round. I mean I have a wall of crosses in our entry, why not a nativity?

We always have a "real" tree so it gets set up about a week before christmas...and we take it down a bit after new years...being real wood it goes in the wood stove after a little chopping. All of our christmas decorations fit in one large rubbermaid "tote" this make it way up from the basement for this 2 to 3 weeks then back down till next year.

We actually have a 3 ft lighted Creche that is kept up year round. This one is a silhouette and is back lighted with rope light, not to bright just a glimmering light. It gets a LOT of compliments year round. The one we hear most is: I love driving down your driveway and seeing this. Gives such a warm welcome"! So go for it. In fact, post pix.

@360 Sod (Donna Dixson) great Idea...I have already done many branch cross sections as small "tokens" for our geocaching adventures. I have used some juniper from our ranch where the 1 to 2" dia section have up to 150 growth rings per inch. My girls call them Tree Cookies.
