Years ago we would cut our own tree and that would happen the following weekend. It's hard to keep a cut tree fresh from Thanksgiving weekend through to the New Year weekend.
I usually wait until the beginning of December. I do a little bit at a time and save the tree for last...like Kc said, it's hard to keep it alive for several weeks. I'd rather leave my decor up until at least New Years than have to take it down the day after Christmas because it's become a fire hazard.

Thanksgiving weekend or the weekend after. We typically spend Thanksgiving at Pismo Beach, camping with the pets.
