I use cuphooks e v e r y w h e r e. Makes putting up and taking down a breeze. Command hooks will work too!
Depending on how thick the wires are to the strings of lights you want to display on the window boxes, usually these nail-in clips are wide enough to hold them in place. The bonus is that they can be kept on the boxes ready to go for next season.
Hi Biddy! The lights are so pretty in window boxes! Now you can buy battery operated lights for window boxes and for your doors. We bought a couple last year at Home Depot. Check out these links~

All battery operated lights, even the 'mini' ones, eat batteries like crazy. As well, the position of the battery compartment box is often inconvenient to reach to change out the batteries. If you do decide to go this route rather than electric, definitely get the rechargeable batteries.
