Hi Debbie,
For an inexpensive, fun, personal and meaningful gift… How about filling a container with activities, small gifts, favors, etc. that he can redeem whenever he wants throughout the upcoming year? Make it very personal, considering what he most enjoys. Some ideas might be a night at the movies, taking a walk, neck and shoulder massage, a meal out, a home cooked favorite meal at home, a bike ride, a car ride to a favorite destination, a day all to himself to do whatever he pleases, you get the idea.
These things can either be written on slips of paper (use decorative thicker or colorful paper that you can fold using simple origami— find technic easily on Internet). For something a little more masculine, you could purchases thin metal tags or small pieces of wood from a craft/hobby store. On metal, you could write your “things” using a pointed object with no ink or pencil lead… It would be more like pressing the words into the metal, kind of like a reversed embossing. With the wood you could write the things with a woodburning tool.
Then, have fun with choosing a container to put all of these things in. Again, personalize it depending on what your husband most enjoys. You mentioned the garage, perhaps he is a bit of a handyman, and you could put the things in a spiffy new toolbox? Or if he is a coffee drinker, buy a nice new coffee maker and fill the carafe with all of these things.
This project is great because it forces you to really think about what your partner enjoys (some cost money, and some are absolutely free). And in the end, the goal is for him to be touched by your thoughtfulness. Have fun!
