I used to just twine it about my tree. My daughter though did display for a premier dept store and I remember a year she had this problem. The pattern had to be repeated in the same way around the tree. . . as I recall it was like a big diamond shape. It was her math that led her to the solution!
For the most natural look, drape loosely on the branches and tuck inside them close to the trunk. This makes the inside of the tree look bulkier, shinier and leaves the edges of the branches free to hang ornaments. It also helps reflect the lights.
I like to attach the garland at the top, then work down and around from there.
