My nephew made these awesome Santa and snowman from cedar fence post rails.
After cutting the wood to 14 1/2 inches long, paint the snowman white. Then paint the mouth, add an orange dowel nose, and a fabric scarf. The hat is made from a 1/4 inch plywood cut into a 6 inch circle and painted black. The crown is a 1 1/2 inch dowel painted black and glued to the 6 inch circle.
Buttons are glued onto the body of the snowman.
The Santa is painted red. The beard, mustache, and eyebrows are cut from 1/4 inch plywood and painted white and then glued onto the fence post.
Santa's hat was made from red and white fleece. I cut a long triangle out of the red fleece and then added a rectangle of white fleece to wide part of the triangle. Stitch up the side and add a white pompom to the tip of the hat.
