marble trays are very in tendence lately. due to the noble material, it made of and the high-quality finishing they might be costly a little bit. a marble tray is extremely heavy and the risk of breaking it is very likely. that's why i though about making a faux marble tray just by reusing my old kid's mini bookshelf.

the standing bookshelf was falling in parts, but the shelves were still looking good. i fetched in the garage and found a leftover of a black spray paint, white paint, and a sealer from my old projects. hey, you don't have to go with the same colors or the same material i used, because what I'm trying to do is just giving you the technique i used to make it and the inspiration to replicate it in any other surface like a simple board, shelve, countertop, desk, floor, table...

after taking a part the standing bookshelf i had 3 different shelves. i used each of them differently, black over white or white over black and even in gray.

i prepared the board by filling with a wood filler all the holes and the imperfections and smoothed them with a sandpaper.

i gave it a spray with a black glossy finish paint but you can just paint them with a regular paint and brush or roller. but as you know the result with a spray paint is always superior.

using a thin brush i started making wiggly lines emitting the marble vines.

this is the most crucial moment when you start turning those lines to a real marble look.

before the white lines start drying, dump a piece of fabric with water and start tapping to spread the lines all over the board and try to swipe with a large brush left and right all over the white lines.

then, dry with a dry fabric and repeat the operation again with the white line, wet fabric, swipe with the brush and then dry fabric...

do that until you are satisfied with the result and the board looks almost like a real marble.

its a fun and unique experience don't hesitate to try it even in a small board im sure you'll get to it.

i will leave a tutorial at the end to watch how i did it.

i covered the sides of the board with gold leaf or you can use a gold paint or pencil. but the gold leafing looks much better.

when everything was perfectly dry, i applied a clear sealer and let it set over night.

i bought a marble handles from Hobby Lobby that were 50% off and drilled both sides to put them in. you can glue the handles with a superglue if you're not comfortable to use a power tool!!
