I always say signs are like bumper stickers.

They proclaim and shout who we are, what we love and if we have a sense of humor!

Let's chat (or chuckle) about these recent ones I made.
For my signs I like to use regular, cheap pine wood. I find it at the local hardware store. For cheap. Did I say that? ha!

After all I am going to paint OVER the wood. So just find some wood. Even used scrap wood if you can!
Now I rub some of this awesomeness over it. It's stain. That dries fast!
I wear gloves and use a lint free rag.
Once dried, you can experiment with colors! My go to paint is Junk Monkey Paint. There is no priming, no sanding, no stripping and its easy to use.

It dried to a flat matte, which is what I'm looking for when I'm making distressed, time-worn signs!

Let's look at the first one up close...
Yup, simple stain (the one shown) and then some white vinyl lettering. Classic, bold and sure to catch the eye!
Next one is the same stain, but I dry brushed some Junk Monkey Paint (Color: Antique Lace) all over it. Like it?
For the next two, I went with a brown background. So instead of a dark black stain, I painted on some Junk Monkey Paint (Color: Candy Bar Brown).

When you are trying to make things look old, black and browns are your go to looks!
Check out this look.......I took it one step further. I used the brown. Let dry. I dry brushed some Antique Lace color, and then used some Junk Monkey Antiquing Glaze! I used the brown color glaze. It sits on top of everything and makes it look tea stained....and darkened!
So which one was your fav??????

love these !! I have the same question though about the lettering. Where do you get them ? And how do you apply them ?

  • What is your go to company, website or other source for word/letter stencils? I never seem to find what I want.

They are so cute. I needed the one about peeing on the seat for my grandson. He just did that today. 😐
