Use things you have and love. Start with one item as focal point....usually largest or tallest item. Add items that fit your theme (holiday...family...occasion...season). I only put an odd number of things on my mantle since your mind tries to pair thongs up and that can be boring. Don't make the arrangement too perfect since "quirky" is more interesting.
For daily use, keep it simple with objects you have and enjoy like tall and short decorations (I used some old brass candle sticks and tall candles with smaller western ceramic) It should be YOUR preference. We love the western or wildlife look. You want to vary the height as well as texture. You can use mantle cloth also, or a large mirror. I even have a copper windmill I use on it occasionally. Then too, remember holidays and seasons are great for decorative ideas. Here are a few I chose for you:

I would look on Pinterest for ideas and then go to a store like Hobby Lobby or HomeGoods and pick up some items that will work all year round. Then you can add some holiday or seasonal items to it to change it up a little each season.
