How to Style One Bookshelf Five Different Ways.

The bookshelf is just a basic three tiered white shelf that is so great for accessorizing a small space like the end of my hallway.

I wanted a more neutral style for the focal point so my first shot at decorating the shelf was all about white and texture.

I took the dust covers off the books and re-wrapped them with the white paper inside showing instead of the colors. You can also achieve a uniform look with any colored paper. Making the books all the same color means you focus on the shape and not the titles.

One of the design guides I usually incorporate in styling a bookshelf is to not fill the entire length with books. The books should be part of the decor and not just the function of the bookshelf.

With my second attempt at styling the bookshelf, I added color in pops of yellow and orange. I removed the dust covers completely and let the colors of the book bindings become part of the overall design. A live plant is on top this time.

I also never put the books on each shelf in the same direction. Alternating the books both horizontally and vertically creates a better flow and balance.

A bookshelf can also showcase a collection.

I styled the bookshelf again this time using my collection of colored and clear canning jars.

Shopping my own house for new items and ideas, I changed up the style of the bookshelf again. If you will notice, the books themselves are never the same for each style change.

This time I turned the books around and displayed the book pages for visual texture instead of the book spines showing. I also put more vintage accessories in red, white, and blue. These are my favorite colors to display for the summer months.

Overall, I like the books in the white covers, so the last time I went back to that style but added more brown tones to the accessories.

This look will be good for the fall months.

You will probably notice that I didn't change out the frames over the bookshelf with each style change. That is for two reasons. Those shelves were hard enough to hang and get even, and I promised my daughter that the pictures of her and her brother as small kids would go back up at the end of the hallway. Evidently they make her smile each night when she comes home.

So even though I will change out the accessories over time with this bookshelf, I will never change out the pictures.
