You know those things that you pick up here and there and you just kind of wait until inspiration hits? Well I came up with a simple idea to update a mirror that I had picked up at a garage sale.
I got this mirror at a garage sale for $1. The frame was pretty flimsy and I came up with a cool idea to give the mirror some more life!
I began by removing the backing and the old frame. This was actually super easy to do with this mirror because it was so old. There is glue that holds the mirror into the frame that I was concerned about cracking the mirror however the backing and the frame came apart super easy.
We had some old barn wood pieces we had acquired and I asked my husband to help me cut it down to size. We first cut it to length.
Once we had it cut to length we had to cut the board in half.
I gave the boards a quick sanding with my Ryobi sander. Just enough to clean them up a little bit. I didn't want to take off much of the character I just wanted it to be smooth to the touch.
Since we cut the boards we had some raw wood now. I wanted the same look around all the sides of the boards so I grabbed my go to Unicorn SPiT! Weathered Daydream is the perfect color for this project. I also grabbed my antibacterial disinfecting wipes. These wipes are the perfect tool for adding my SPiT and for blending the color in.
I dabbed some of the color on the sides and used my antibacterial wipe to spread and blend.
I didn't want the sides to be totally covered so after the SPiT dried we took high grit sandpaper and lightly roughed up the sides to have a more cohesive look.
We grabbed some left over plywood that we had from a previous project and cut it to length to cover the back of the mirror.
We grabbed our Gorilla Glue and applied some to the back of the plywood where the mirror would be placed. We wanted to add some extra adhesion. After we had the glue in place we gently placed the mirror onto the piece of plywood.
We then placed the barn wood frame where we wanted it and pre-drilled holes for the screws into the plywood.
And here it is! I think it turned out well for just a random thought and things around the house! I wish there was a better way to take a picture of a mirror but I haven't figured it out yet!
