It’s hard to believe but FALL is just around the corner. Are you preparing for your fall decor yet? Here is an easy tutorial on how to hand paint a White Pumpkin Pillow Cover using drop cloth fabric and chalk paint.

Did you know that Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is very soft even when dry and is therefore great for painting on fabric. Acrylic craft paints require a fabric medium to make them pliable on fabric and therefore are not as easy to work with.

Hand Painted Pillow cover

You can purchase a this pillow cover or make your own from drop cloth fabric.

Make your own pillow cover

In this example I used drop cloth fabric and using a serger stitched around the edges of the 12″ by 22″ pillow. I leave the end open and add ties to secure the pillow filler inside the cover.

First, add a protective barrier to the inside of your pillow cover. I use a piece of card stock or wax paper.

Using a black sharpie pen, I drew the pumpkin design.

If you are not good a free handing a design, you can create a template to trace the design. You can see a similar technique on Spring Pillow with Scrap Fabric. I begin with the center pumpkin and then add an additional pumpkin to each end. You want the two side pumpkins to appear to be resting behind the center one.

I apply an uneven coat of the Old White Chalk Paint for a distressed pumpkin appearance. You can apply either a heavy coat or light depending on your preference.

Add shading

Next, with a smaller brush begin to shade the edges and lines of the pumpkins with Graphite Chalk Paint. This works best if done immediately after applying the white paint. If the paint is dry, blending is more difficult.

In addition, add some random swipes of Yellow Ochre paint to the stems and a few areas on the white pumpkins. The Yellow Ochre is mixing with the chalk paint in small amounts so there’s no need for a fabric medium.

Finally, take the sharpie and add some curls to the stems on the pumpkins. If you’d prefer a ready made pillow cover like this one, you can see options here in my store.

I hope you enjoyed this easy tutorial for making a White Pumpkin Pillow Cover.
