No Sew Pillow Covers With a Felt Flower

We recently installed new carpet in our bedroom (that was oh so desperately needed for years now!) and I’m giving our bedroom a whole new look! I wanted a couple of throw pillows that matched our new duvet cover and was looking on Pinterest for some inspiration for no-sew pillow ideas. I was looking for something that I could quickly whip up and add as an extra touch to the newer color scheme with modern touches and accents. The end product is not an original idea, but I do believe I have great step-by-step instructions that will help you to truly see just how easy and cheap it is to add just one item to spruce up a room!

Materials needed to make a no-sew pillow cover with a felt flower:

• Standard throw pillow covers (I got these gray ones here.)
• Felt in the color you want. You will need enough to make about 50 petals. I used a take out coffee cup as my circle template needed for petals. I ended up ordering this blue felt here but it was way more than I needed for this project. You could just go to Walmart and get a few sheets of felt. But if you do shop via Amazon, you will have a wider color selection.
• Pillow cover inserts (I had tan ones on had that I put in the pillow cases.) Or you could just shop for solid color throw pillows directly on Walmart and skip this step if you don’t already have throw pillows you want to use for this project.
• Scissors
• Metallic colored sharpies
• Tape measure
• Hot glue gun

Before I even begin with the step-by-step tutorial, you may be thinking that I’m already cheating because I purchased already sewn pillow covers. That is true! But the time and money I would spend on fabric, zippers, and my poor sewing skills makes spending a little over $5 for each cover makes them totally worth it in my opinion!

Instructions on how to make your no-sew pillow cover with a felt flower:

1. The first thing you need to do is purchase your pillow covers. Pay attention to the size of the cover vs. the actual size of the pillow insert you have. I accidentally purchased 18″x18″ covers when I really only needed 16″x16″. Purchasing the pillows or pillow covers (at a very affordable price) is what makes this no-sew pillow covers project so easy!

2. If you choose to make your felt flower out of a dark color like I did, then I recommend getting silver or gold metallic sharpies so that you can easily see the circles that you draw. If you have a lighter color, then just a normal black sharpie or any marker will do. I used a to-go coffee cup bottom as my template to create the “petals” of the felt flower.

3. You will most likely need at least 40 petals. I ended up needing closer to 55 to fill in some gaps that I noticed when I thought I was finished. After you draw the circles and cut them all out, the next step is to hot glue just one section of the felt circle to the other. Hold it together for a few seconds (without burning yourself) and now you have an official petal!

4. Once you get your petals made, then its time to start laying them out on your pillow case and creating your felt flower. I had an 18″x18″ pillow case and decided to place a petal 3″ in on each side to make the “outline” of the circle for the large felt flower.

5. Once I had those 4 in place, I knew I had to fill in the rest to make a complete circle. I attempted to use a 16-12-6-1 pattern of petals. It looked great when it was flat, but I ended up needing more petals once the pillow was in the cover. You may want to build your flower with your pillow already inside the cover to avoid this mistake.

6. You’ll need plenty of hot glue sticks as you will be needing a line of glue under each petal to hold it in place.

7. Here is the 16-12 pattern I attempted to create.

8. Then filled in the third row with 6 and one last petal in the very center.

9. The 16-12-6-1 pattern looked great until I put the pillow into the case. When I did that, all of the petals spread way out and there was too much gray showing through for my liking. So I cut out 10-15 more circles and made more petals to fill in those gray areas.

10. Here is the finished product on my duvet cover. I only put the felt flower on one pillow. I figured it would look too busy if I put it on the second – so I just left that as it is. I also have matching table runners that I’m going to add to the top of my bed and on top of another small table I have in the room.
